Well, I have to be honest with you.

It’s been hard.

It’s been hard since the Open Mind closed its doors at the end of January; I’ve been in a funk since then.

Oh, I can’t bs you. I’ve been depressed and it seems to be getting worse instead of getting better.

I don’t want to whine. I really don’t, but maybe if I share my feelings with you, I’ll be able to get past it and move on. But there’s a part of me telling me that no one cares anyway and that I should just forget about it. Give up. Quit and wallow.

This voice has been buggin’ me my whole life.

I remember watching baseball on tv when I was a kid and it was always Kurt Gowdy and Tony Kubek calling the national games (on ABC, I believe). Well, whenever the Pirates played, it seemed that Kurt Gowdy and Tony Kubek we always routing for the other side to win, but Kubek always seemed particularly annoying.

Then I found out about the 1960 World Series and I understood why. Sour grapes.

Well, to get back to The Voice, it’s kinda like having a couple of play by play announcers in my head always routing for the other team.

Always. And it’s been worse lately, but I do feel a little better after having written this down. I guess that’s the solution: Writing it down. If Kubek will let me.

I' ve become a Louise Hay junkie lately. You can turn all those negative thoughts around. You can start all those positive affirmations to counter the dark demons. There's a terrific CD in her latest book so that you can drive around town and get so positive that you start to glow in the dark. I also read in a book by Esther Hicks that you can choose the thought that gives you relief.

You can do it. And yes, we care.

God has something NEW for you. Much better than what you had before. You were so committed to the first thing that there was no room for growth or anything new. To keep it going you dug in even deeper, struggling to keep it. Now clean out all the disappointment, Know that God loves you, allow yourself to feel it and expect the new!
When you let go of the past..or what you lost....and look forward to what God has for you. You will see it, hear it and be so happy in it!!!

I have that voice too...

My kids are all grown .. and all four live ... away...
I have been in a funk since then.. a long time.
I miss knowing the Open Mind was there..
it almost seems like the more we need places of light..
the more they blink out. Reality Bites

I confess to not going in often.. I went for gifts, cards.. fragrance ...
but it is hard for me to not be at home. I manage work...
but then I have to fly home. I would like to be a stay at home k.
Where I work needs a lot of light.. I just dont have it in me to try to be a light there.
Too hard and long to explain.

I am sorry the OM had to close.. and I am so sorry that it makes you sad.
I know that you have no idea who I am.. but I liked seeing you..

I love your honesty and courage. Having suffered from depression most of my life, I feel your pain. I know everyone is different and must find their own path, but I feel I would be remiss if I didn't at least share with you a treatment that has changed my life with depression--EMDR. hey! i know that voice. its particularly annoying when you know everything you're supposed to do to get rid of it and it's still there.

anyway, i don't know if this will make you feel better or worse but i cant tell you what a hole is in sewickley since the open mind closed. i keep wishing it will just come back. there was something so comforting and magical about it and we miss it terribly. the beauty and warmth it brought to our community can't be replaced. i know energy shifts and change happens, but i still have a hard time with it sometimes. and i understand your emotional struggle. its not easy being a sensitive soul but i just keep telling myself its a gift and i must be grateful and use it in a positive way, and i will just as soon as i get out from some of this pressure! i know thats not an excuse, but sometimes i just feel like i could sleep for a week.

so phil just know that you are not alone and there is a voice out here cheering for you! a couple of voices! (i know h. would concur.)

Hey Phil... about the voices and the depression... I've been there. Have had alot of success with EFT.
Go to: http://www.emofree.com/ and search 'depression' etc.
EFT releases these energies at the cellular level.
You tap on certain acupuncture points while speaking the truth of how you feel.

So sorry to hear how you feel. We all experience these tfeelings at some point in life. I think the key to getting through them is that one-day-at-a-time thing. Looking far ahead, even a week, takes away what is going on RIGHT NOW. You are a kind, talented intelligent man. No one can take that from you. Hello Phillip!! Oh, gracious me!!! Are you SERIOUS??? Has not that "other" window opened for you as yet? Do not like to hear that one of our own is depressed and in a funk. I must say, even though I could not get down there very often, I do miss the Open Mind store. Really, we used to come down when it was upstairs and was very disappointed when they painted over the mural at the top of the stairs. Seemed to lose something at that point. Cannot remember who took over the upstairs or if indeed it was yours or what.

Anyways, we cannot look back but forward to all the good things coming our way and that includes you and yours.

You don't really know me, but I've often shopped at the Open Mind and enjoyed the space and your presence there.

I just wanted to respond to your message; except for the baseball references (I didn't grow up in Pittsburgh or watching any other team either), I really appreciate what you said about the lingering depression. I would love to find an on-going, maybe online group to talk about just that sense of lingering depression. Some place to talk about how meds can work, but are best taken for certain time spans and sometimes hard to stop. And that depression can be a really interesting sort of process; of working through all kinds of interesting life issues, but also just really painful.

You know this, of course, and have contact with many healers and readers and folks who can help you make sense of these times. So, I will send some light and love your way; and wish you well on this part of your journey.

Phil, we are so very sorry that you've been down...it's understandable: perhaps you are grieving. On so many days since January, both Carmen and I have had the "Open Mind" trip impulse, only to think, "No. It's not there anymore." We haven't even wanted to go to Sewickley to have to see the empty or otherwise occupied space. Haven't been to Sewickley since right before the OM closed.

I'm glad you shared feelings...it's "better out than in"...soldiering on in silent misery is pointless, when in fact, it DOES matter, and Carmen and I have felt a real sense of loss: the place, the people, the totally neat jewelry..Carmen remarked just recently (as he has a number of times) "I wish that I could go to the Open Mind and pick out one of their unique pieces of jewelry again." So do I. I have and wear my Open Mind things perhaps more than any others, except meaningful rings.

I miss you, miss Pat McGuire (and worry about her silence, and her future), miss seeing Lisa and the other people who patronized the OM. I miss the incense, the music, the specialness of the whole OM presence.

I was always puzzled and felt an inward "start" when I heard anyone refer to the Open Mind as a "store" or a "bookstore". I never felt that way about it--to me it was a Sacred Space, and still is. To me it was a Spiritual Center and Resource Center...it was never a store to me.

Why give up? Why listen to a crappy self-doubt tape in your head? Tell Kubek to go F himself, and take Curt Gowdy with him. Tell them to Piss Off--it's your head, they don't belong there. What does your HEART say to you? What does Lisa say? What do you feel about it all? Quitting and wallowing is very opposite the spirit of hope, forward movement, enlightenment, and growth that was the whole point of the Open Mind. It was about learning to cope with pain, fear, adversity past and present, and negative voices that intruded into the dreams we spun in our hearts and heads.

It has been hard, and sad, and a great loss. I went to the Open Mind the whole time it existed: was it 14 or 15 years. I was glad when you took over from "the group" because I thought that was goofy from day one, and wasn't too sure what Diane Sonne (or whatever she calls herself now) and possibly Karen the Witch had in mind when that whole thing was whipped up. Still, it was a chapter, a passage.

Never say never, Phil. Never is not having an Open Mind--which, after all, is like having a parachute, so I have heard. Things will eventually pick up..This period in our economy HAS been a Depression in itself...there has been a thick cloud over many lives. But it will end.

Do you love the events you plan? Do people attend? Are the participants happy there? Does it make you happy to be there? Let yourself be happy--as in Yoga, it's about ALLOWING, not about forbidding.

If none of this works for you, I want you to think about all the people who felt lost enough or sad enough or were gripped by trauma and pain enough to NEED the Open Mind. You couldn't stay in business if you kept losing money--bankruptcy is not fun and games. But there was a bright steady light on Beaver Street in Sewickley for over ten years--that's a generation: ten years. And that light still shines for me, though I have tears in my eyes when I think and remember and wish. There are resurrections, there are dreams that never die, there are feelings that become the ties that bind. Love never dies. The Open Mind was Love.

I miss Pat McGuire terribly--not just as a "reader" but as a true Spiritual Advisor. That was how I referred to her. I love her and Minnie and fear that I will not see them again. Now that is a true misfortune and a huge loss, not just to me. By what human standard is her situation fair? By none that I can fathom, but there is chaos and randomness....we have our health, our bodies they are more than suitcases for the Soul--they are the means by which the Soul carries out its purposes and missions in life. We all have a shelf life, an expiration date...which are the lucky among us? Those who DON'T have a time frame spelled out to them, or those who do? Which are able to live more fully, purposefully, and authentically? I guess it depends on the person. If you had 1 year to live, what would you choose to do? Six months? Three months? Twenty four hours? That would be your heart speaking to you when you get the answers.

You may be in "career transition" but it may not be permanent. It may be a holding area, like what Limbo is supposed to be, though Catholic lore is not my forte.

If you feel down, try to make someone else feel good. Fall asleep praying for everyone you care for, and even for some you don't...then start counting blessings, large and small. You will not be awake for long.

Be good to yourself, Phil...you did not fail--is that what that pissy voice is really about?

Hi Phil,

I know you don't know me very well (or maybe even remember me) but I feel compelled to write you back. I would imagine you're getting lots and lots of emails of support for the work you did creating and maintaining that special vibe which was what the OM was known for. I regret not being able to become involved in the happenings there.

For what it's worth you're not alone with the antagonistic head-trip voices. I feel like I have a whole family of them in my brain, stopping me from doing/saying the right thing, ridiculing every mistake, you know the routine. Depression, guilt, and shame can really be crippling can't they. What a perfect combination - you do something to work on one and it feeds the others.

When I was facilitating drum circles and workshops all the time I used to try and channel the energy of your OM emails when writing my own. Not copying material but going for that - buoyancy - that you conveyed. Even in this email it's there.

I guess the point of all this is to say that you were/are appreciated and you're also not alone in the funk. Hey, if you ever want to sit down over pizza and a drink I'm game.

Sounds like you may want to check out this website, http://www.theemotioncode.com/ and read about the book. I read the book, took the seminar in Toronto and am now working on getting my certification in working with folks. The process is based on the fact that trapped emotions in the body cause all types of distress from physical to emotional.

The process involves kinesiology, intent and magnets. I know...sounds a bit of a stretch...but I have seen some alleviation of physical stuff such as pain from sciatica, skin rashes, and back pain. The more ingrained emotional/mental states take more time to remove for some reason. The connection between the physical discomforts and removed emotions can be pretty amazing.

Let me know if you want to know more or have any questions. While I am "learning" the process, there is a fellow in New Ken who has been combining EFT with this process and is quite skilled. His name is Denny Sulava and he is a retired teacher who has been involved with EFT since 2001. Let me know if you want his email or telephone number.

Sorry you are feeling so blue...I know you have had a tough and challenging year.

Remember that nothing is as bad as it seems...likewise nothing is as good as it seems.

The "devil" in depression is that judgement is poor and perception is skewed in a negative and dramatic direction. You are loved and you love, this is all that matters.

You can once again feel that your life has purpose...find the help that you need to allow it in!

Hi Phil!

Of course you would have the blues after the closing of something that was a huge part of your life and your entire world. Jeez, I'm depressed just having another birthday not to mention all of the other crappy things that have happened to me in the past year. But from all of this fortunately comes spiritual growth and knowledge. I myself am finding that learning" how to roll with the punches" is leaving me bruised and sometimes hard to get myself out of that black hole i have been in all of my life.

I am reading a self help book right now called "Feeling Good, The New Mood Therapy" by David D. Burns, M.D. It is a national bestseller and all, but when the person suggested to me that I read it I wanted to laugh in their face but I wasn't laughing much those days anyway, so I ordered it online and was skeptical at best. The book was a little more work than I expected but did help me crawl back out of my hole. It seemed the more I was open with my depression to my friends and family the better things got and was able to move past at least that part of life. Every other day is a battle but now I feel a little more equipped to help myself. I even kept a journal for awhile! And still probably should.

Anyway, I know I am probably not telling you anything that you don't already know with your schooling and knowledge that, you always seemed to possess to me, even though we were kids and I knew you only a short time, but I guess I just want you to know that you have support all around you and I will always consider you and your family my friends! I am sure a new door is going to open soon for you and I can't wait to hear what it is.

My father is fading.

I just got a call from my mother that my dad, Bill Harris, is now receiving
morphine every 2 hours. I knew as soon as I saw the caller ID that something
was wrong. It's not unexpected nor a shock but even when you get the call,
you're not quite sure where to put the information.

It looked like my dad, who turned 86 in September, was going to die right
around Thanksgiving. He had been in the hospital and some 'doctor' thought it
would be a good idea to send him home on Thanksgiving. Late in the afternoon
my oldest brother Logan brough him home from the hospital. Dad made it to the
chair in the living room and stayed there. He barely opened his eyes the whole
day. He's on coumadin, a blood thinner, which makes him feel cold all the
time. He only spoke to say how he was freezing.

He made it to bed that night but fell the next day. My mother, Paulina, who is 82
couldn't get him off the floor, neither could my sister's husband, Dave.
Finally Logan and my other, also older, brother DAnny cam over and got him off
the floor. An ambulance was called and he was taken back to the hospital.
He had had a heart attack.

He has diabetes, high blood pressure, and congestive heart failure. For some
reason, he decided to get a pacemaker in early November. This was something he
had refused to do for at least the last five years. Well, because he had the
surgery he contracted MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and
they put him on antibiotics.

It looked like he was going to pass after Thanksgiving and he was receiving
hospice care in the hospital. But then he started to do better.

He was moved to the county home where my sister, Paula, a nurse works. He's
been doing ok and I was hoping to see him on Christmas. But I guess yesterday
was a bad day and now he's back on morphine every two hours. I'll be heading
up to Mercer today to see him.

Well, it looks like we are coming to a conclusion here at the Open Mind.
I have spoken with an attorney about it and it looks inevitable.
It's hard to fathom that I have been here, in one form or another, for 13 years.
But it looks like the Great Recession will be the final nail in the coffin.

Question of the Month

When loved ones communicate in a reading, why do they often convey trivial things such as a message about a recent event that is of little consequence to us? Why don’t they tell us about more important things in life?

Such information is important for one reason: spirit loved ones want us to know they are aware of our lives because their consciousness has survived death. The process of mediumship requires them to link to the mind and thoughts of the medium. In doing so, they reconnect with their earthly life and memories that they often shared with you. This bond or relationship continues after death and spirits frequently refer to it to let you know they are still with you and other family members. Conveying these messages also gives evidence of their identity, especially if it is information that is known only to you. Also remember that your loved ones can communicate from their point of view only and not from that of a more spiritually advanced soul, for example. At times, however, spirits will give what I call the BP- the Big Picture. That is, they will offer wisdom to help us on our life pathway or with current challenges, as long as it doesn’t interfere with our need or mission to discover things on our own. This type of message is offered from a spiritually-based perspective that is obtained from their vantage point in spirit and often, from their own life-review. Loved ones see this as their way of helping us avoid the same pitfalls they also encountered. Still, we must remember that we alone are responsible for the choices we make through free will.

Releasing Your Past and Future

When I come home, I’m always exuberantly greeted by the wagging tails and loud barking of my dogs, Lincus and Bailey. It doesn’t matter if I’ve been gone 5 minutes or 5 days. They offer the same warm “Welcome home, my friend!” in dog lingo. It’s amusing to me how they simply don’t care about their rousing demonstration of affection. They just do it-thankfully without thinking.

Because they are animals without the capacity to worry about the past or future, they are beautifully engaged in being with present time. What if, before greeting me, they thought about the times in the past that I’ve not greeted them the same way because I had a hard day? What if they decided to withhold their love for me based on that memory? What if they became anxious or depressed thinking about the possibility that I didn’t make enough money this month to feed or house them?

Most of us hold onto our pasts and entertain worry about our future instead of being in the unfolding moment. We hang onto artificial identities that chain us to dysfunctional and self-defeating patterns. “I was abandoned as a child,” “I’ve been poor most of my life,” or “I missed my chance in life to be someone” are a few examples that are attached to our personal stories of our perceived lack. There are many more we stubbornly cling to. We regret missed opportunities of the past and obsess about the future. Talk about insanity!

I suggest that we consider the perfect way that Spirit expresses itself through animals to learn about how to live. The birds that built their nests for their young on my porch this spring did not appear to me to be particularly concerned about the state of the economy. From my recent observations, the squirrel that visits my birdfeeder hasn’t engaged in any species “turf” wars with the birds that eat from the same source. The mice that have invaded my house in the last several years certainly don’t believe in lack; it’s all theirs as far as they’re concerned. Nor has the local groundhog population complained lately that their parents didn’t love them enough and that is why they are only lowly, ground-dwelling rodents. Hmmm… maybe we can learn something here.

What are your excuses for not enjoying all of Spirit’s abundance? The good news is that you need be immobilized no longer. Right here, right now, you are free to choose to release both the past and the future. Remember you cannot be “there” when you are right “here.” It’s true that everything that happened back there is what you are made of right now. But who you are is never defined or limited in any way by those episodes, no matter how gut-wrenching they may be. You are Spirit expressing perfectly now.

This is what one of my favorite spiritual teachers, Eckhart Tolle, calls Presence.

How can we move into Presence and out of addictive thinking? Meditation is the easiest vehicle that transports us into the awareness of the Divine Self. I encourage you to engage in it as often as possible. In embracing the now, you will eliminate consuming thoughts of the past and future. You do not have to go off to an ashram and sit on a satin pillow to meditate: you can go into this stillness whenever or wherever you are that does not require alert attention. A Personal message from Carole

Dear Friends,
I’ve been enjoying the outdoors because summer is my favorite time of year. Last evening, I inhaled the luxurious scents of the neighboring woods on the short drive home from my office. With my car window wide open, I felt an incredible blast of freedom without the need for the car’s heater or the restrictive bulk of a winter coat. A CD of my favorite love songs played. All was well in my world. How could 11 minutes be any more pleasurable? I almost regretted having to pull into my driveway.
Sometime in that time span, I received the insight that this sense of liberation must be similar to our natural state of grace as pure spiritual beings. We are unencumbered by the heaviness of our own egos and all of its imposed restrictions. During readings, I have experienced small but powerful glimpses of this bliss. It has always impressed me as the place to be- whether we are here (in physical reality) or there in spirit. The only difference is our own state of perception. I’ve come to understand that the choice to experience freedom is up to us. Live within restriction or let go in the flow, so to speak. Making the essential connection with our spiritual core leads us on our individual and universal path of freedom.
I offer this month’s article, “Connecting with Your Life Purpose through Meditation,” with the hope that you have already found your true purpose, despite life’s challenges. If you have not, I encourage you to go within to discover the missing ingredient that will unveil the divine roadmap of your journey.

Question of the Month

"How can I forgive my brother who recently passed? He and I had a strained relationship all of our lives and I carry a lot of anger because he hurt me emotionally. Please tell me how to let go of this."

I have spoken with many clients who have come for readings who sincerely want to heal old wounds with someone- a family member or friend- who is now in spirit. By doing many readings, I have found that it is indeed possible to heal these past hurts with those in spirit by allowing divine love to flow into our hearts. This is because when we pass into spirit, we are shown the implications of our choices in the life we just completed. In many readings, those in spirit ask for forgiveness from those here. In the spirit world, our guides and angels assist us in understanding the meaning of our life lessons and advise us on taking the next step on our spiritual journey.
Perhaps you’ve heard the old adage, “Let go and let God.” This is never as true as in the case of forgiving another. We are incapable of experiencing peace in our lives as long as we stubbornly hold onto resentments. Sometimes our anger and pain is so overwhelming that we must ask for divine grace to give us the willingness to let go. Please know that the instant you are willing to open your heart to love, that healing is occurring. We can accelerate the process by understanding that each person is essentially innocent in the eyes of Spirit. How can this be? We make choices based on our level of spiritual consciousness and love others according to how much we feel divine love within. If we do not know Spirit within, we cannot truly love another. As we continue to spiral towards a greater realization of our divine identity, we release old attachments that weigh us down.
I recommend you write your brother a letter. Tell him how you feel about the past hurts and that you release him and yourself into the healing light of Spirit. In a symbolic gesture, you may burn the letter and imagine the old emotional pain you’ve been harboring is transmuted in the flames. Imagine that the smoke from the fire is dissolving every last particle of anger you carry. Afterwards, take a fresh sheet of paper and write about the good qualities of your brother. Ask your Higher Self to help you see the light of your brother’s soul. Finally, connect daily with Spirit within through meditation.

Connecting with Your Life Purpose through Meditation

Carla, a bright-eyed, attractively dressed woman in her mid 30’s asked me during a reading, “What am I supposed to be doing with my life? I feel as if it has no meaning. Can you tell me what career will bring me deeper fulfillment?” They were words I’d heard dozens of times before. Over the years, I have done readings for many people who desire to connect more deeply with their life purpose but don’t know how. Frustrated and desperate, they come to seek relief from feelings of boredom, dissatisfaction or burn-out (wake-up calls signaling much needed change) in their current life circumstances. Most of them have been unaware that they alone hold the key to discovering their life purpose by going within through meditation.

Spiritually speaking, our life purpose is beautifully simple: Each of us is here to express Spirit to its fullest extent. Period. This is what is referred to by some spiritual teachers as “primary” purpose. Given this tenet, if we accomplish nothing else during an entire lifetime, we have been successful.. It is why we can say, from a spiritual perspective, we are inherently perfect beings as expressions of Spirit. A Course in Miracles states that we need do “nothing.” We are assured of our divine heritage by simply being pure Spirit.

When people like Carla want to know what they “should be doing,” they are referring to the secondary or “outer” purpose. This is how we choose to express Spirit- the specific and unique situations, relationships, careers and service work we feel drawn to in our lives. Secondary purpose is always an outgrowth or expression of primary purpose and optimally reflects our consciousness of Spirit within. Dissatisfaction with “outer” life stems from our being disconnected from primary purpose. Many people seek to reconnect with purpose from the outside world instead of going within, where the real answer lies. They search for deeper fulfillment through trying to secure more money or things. Time is often included in their equation for happiness. “When I get a new job, house, relationship, then I will be in purpose” they believe. When the next “big thing” fails to elicit the sought-after result, they once again feel the all- consuming emptiness of being disconnected from Spirit within.

I believe that we not only discover our outer purpose by practicing meditation, but we can also expand our purpose (and ourselves.) Moments of stillness every day open us to the greatest resource and abundance we will ever have access to: the unlimited love, wisdom and guidance of Spirit. Listening to the inner senses revealed through intuition and meditation helps us to move beyond our disappointment with the outer circumstances of life into accepting these challenges as opportunities to grow stronger spiritually. Connecting with this inner core self first gives us powerful insight into outer life circumstances later.

I’ve found it best to keep this process simple. We tend to complicate our natural connection with Spirit by trying to apply complex meditation tools and rituals when the connection can be made quickly and easily.

The following meditation is one you can use when you want to re-awaken to Spirit. It can also be used for self-renewal or in the elimination of fear when you need encouragement to continue in the midst of challenges:

Sit or lie comfortably in a place where you will be undisturbed. Close your eyes and focus on your breath. Feel the circulation of the in-breath and the out-breath. Breathe naturally, slowly and in flow with the rhythm of your body. See pure white light emanating within you each time you inhale. The light dissolves all physical, emotional or mental discomfort you are carrying. This divine white light cleanses your body, mind and spirit.

In this relaxed state, hold the intent to meet with your Higher Self- the loving and wise inner teacher- Spirit- who is always present within you. This loving self now comes to you in a gentle and easily recognizable way. You see, feel or sense its presence arising within you through your in-coming breath. You feel expanded in your inner wisdom and vision. Your heart opens and awakens to receive this reassuring guidance, which is revealed to you through your inner senses.
Ask Spirit to infuse your awareness completely with its unlimited love and abundance in this moment. Breathe deeply and surrender your concerns in this compassionate embrace. Feel the strength of this inner self that is beyond words and thoughts. Bask in its renewal of you and with the profound realization that you are continually nurtured by this limitless source of love. Breathe deeply and feel this luminous energy open your heart to forgiveness, acceptance and peace. In this and every moment, you are healed.

Imagine yourself giving to others, unencumbered by restrictions. Ask your Higher Self to reveal to you a current circumstance in your life in which you can use this love. This may be in your job, health, family issue or relationship. Whatever it is, it is genuine because it is an expression of your soul. Do not judge the image; simply open your heart to receive it. Imagine this outpouring of love is showering each person, including you, with many blessings. Ask Spirit to open the necessary doorways to bring this vision into physical manifestation. Now release all concerns. Breathe deeply and feel refreshed, renewed and transformed.

If you do not find peace
Inside your own heart,
Then you will not find it
Anywhere else on earth.

In a zoo in California , a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately, due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size, they died shortly after birth.

The mother tiger, after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to decline in health, although physically she was fine. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a depression. The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate another mother's cubs, perhaps she would improve.

After checking with many other zoos across the country, the depressing news was that there were no tiger cubs of the right age to introduce to the mourning mother. The veterinarians decided to try something that had never been tried in a zoo environment. Sometimes a mother of one species will take on the care of a different species.

The only "orphans" that could be found quickly, were a litter of weaning pigs. The zoo keepers and vets wrapped the piglets in tiger skin and placed the babies around the mother tiger. Would they become cubs or pork chops? Take a look...you won't believe your eyes!!

New Year Message from Debbie Donoghue

Hi Everyone.......Well, I'm starting off 2009 a bit behind schedule. I just can't seem to "catch up" at times!! I would like to share a few words about the energies for the first few months of this New Year.

This New Year has left many of us feeling desperate to get our lives back to normal. We feel the financial markets effect on our investments and savings, the job market looking grim, our spiritual lives feeling empty and our physical and emotional bodies in dire need of a tune up!! Does this about sum things up for you? As I have said before, this is a clearing, one unlike any we have experienced in the past. Things will shift, but it will take a bit more time. Navigating in these higher energies is a challenge. We can no longer live our lives as we have in the past, or should I say as we have been told and taught to do. If you continue to negotiate the challenges you are facing in the manor you always have, you will continue to feel drained and defeated. All of us feel we are on a "Spiritual Path", one that is, I suppose, non traditional and for a higher purpose than many around us. We take workshops, classes, read books that are sure to expand our awareness and we talk, yes, we talk. It is now time to not just talk but to walk our walk!! All of what we have learned, read, heard and truly believe needs to be the way we live our lives daily! We need to believe we are Creators, that all is in Divine Order, and remove all of our doubts and fears that are blocking our growth. Bring your thoughts down to your "heart chakra" and feel what you know on a deeper level. Do this every time you feel out of sorts and trust that you are on a cusp of a great awakening. Many of you are being pushed in uncomfortable ways. You are resisting "change", you are holding onto old thought forms that are causing you to doubt all that you have learned. Each one of you has spent years taking steps to awaken your Soul and now that the energies have be amped up, you step back and say, "Wait, I didn't think it was going to be like this." Hold onto a Mantra, hold onto a thought, do what you need to do that will allow you to live the life you have been preparing for for so long. You can do it!!! When you get out of bed each morning start with a positive thought and then feel it, feel it in every cell of your body and hold that thought. At the end of each day, give thanks for your life and those who crossed your path that day.....an attitude of gratitude!!! Remember....."We are all Creator, each sailing out on a voyage of self discovery. Each one of us is guided by a unique chart, of which there is no duplicate."

Lily Dale Assembly Lily Dale 2009

The 130th season at Lily Dale will be from June 26, 2009 through September 6, 2009!

Our season will again begin with The Tibetan Monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery. Register early for their Opening ceremony on Saturday, June 27, and their Closing ceremony on Tuesday, June 30, as seating is limited. They will also be doing a special Sacred Music Sacred Dance for World Healing in the evening on Saturday, June 27. If you are unable to attend the ceremonies, be sure to stop in the Assembly Hall between those dates to watch them make the Mandala. The Monks bring wonderful energy, joy and peace with them to help our season get started.

I sell Action Figures at the Bookstore.

Well, I actually sell a lot of different things at the Bookstore.

People come in and say, "What's all this, I thought you were a bookstore."

Yes, we are a Bookstore but in the age where people come in and look at books and then go and order them online, with nary a feeling towards the future of the Open Mind, we have to sell more than books.

Some people even ask for paper and pencil to write down their choices.

Here is what they say.

"Oh, I'm writing these down:

a) so I don't forget

b) so I can give my daughter and son a list of what I want

c) so I can check and see if I have these at home,

or

d) so I can pick them up next time."

Pretty clever.

For a long time I held my tongue. I even had some 'Christians' come into the store and have me look up some Aramaic translations of the Bible. I even gave a woman the isbn numbers (it was a long time ago). As they left the good 'Christian' woman looked back at me and laughed because she had pulled the wool over my eyes.

And they call 'new age' a cult.

Isn't evil, evil?

If you use evil to fight so called evil, it's still evil.

If you torture people to save other people, you are still committing acts of evil.

Anyway, I also sell actions figures.

Why?

Because the appeal to my sense of irony and because they make people laugh.

The other day, a customer asked, "what do people do with these?"

I just said that they were for fun.

No response.

That they made people laugh?

Nothing.

I used to be that serious all the time. Thank goodness that I'm not anymore.

We can all use a good laugh, especially when we have so many evil 'good' people running around, with no ability to think for themselves or to think beyond themselves.

I love humanity, it's people I can't stand.

Damn.
Things are pretty bad this year as far as sales go.
No surprise, huh?

But things are pretty bad for everyone this year and
I think that things are going to get worse before they get better.

So, this could very well be my last Christmas in retail.

I don't know how I ended up in retail anyway.

I hate to shop. I used to be miserable when I would have to shop, especially if I was shopping with a girlfriend / wife/ mother.

Now I see these miserable bastards come into the Open Mind and shoot me dirty looks.

Pretty funny, huh?

I think the Open Mind has brought a lot of light into people's lives, and that has always been, I truly believe, the reason for the store's existence.

But, it's always been rocky, businesswise at the Open Mind, and it all goes back to when we first bought the store.

We were taken.

Yes, hard to believe but when it comes to business, you can't even trust the owner of a spiritual bookstore. It just proves my point that there is only one true god in the US.

Money.

Look at all 'The Secret' bullshit. It was all about getting money and the basic concept of the movie and the book was ripped off from a couple of former Amway salespeople.

Selfish navel gazing gurus with charge cards.

Oh well, nobody reads this anyway.

Thanksgiving Evening

We have just returned from Thanksgiving at my mother's house.

It was a really wonderful day. My mother (Paulina) is a great cook and the turkey was so tender it melted in my mouth. My sister Paula made some great pies.

My dad (Bill) has not had a good week. A week ago, his brother Vernon passed away and the funeral was just this past Saturday.

My dad is 85 years old and not in great shape.

His brother was probably the person in the world that he was closest to; their father died when my dad was 12 and Vernon was 9. They grew up looking out for each other and then worked together at my dad's lumber business. Uncle Vernon was the sawyer. He was responsible for cutting the logs into boards, blocking or railroad ties. I used to just watch him work; he made it look easy.

So my dad's health is really rocky: bad heart, diabetes, not to mention that he has had his back broken, his elbow shattered, his skull split open (you could see the brain) and been hit by lightening.

And that's just a small sampling.

So I'm feeling very sad for my dad, he's never been very open with his emotions and now he's grieving his brother's death.

As Lisa and I were getting ready to go, I said, "It's been a rough week huh dad?"

He said that it had been a rough week and started to cry.

I hope to get back and see him before Christmas.

But I'm lucky to still have him in my life. He and my mother both.

That's what I'm thankful for...

Superstrong Space Magnets Are Just as Weird as We Thought. That's the title of an article I just finished reading. It's a great title isn't it? It's almost a song lyric...mmm...

Well, it's been such a slow day at the Open Mind Bookstore and, well, it's gettin' kind of scary. Bidnez is so slow and the future of retail just doesn't look real good right now. (2009 will be the 15th year anniversary for the Open Mind.)

Some people say, "Phil, you're just attracting negativity when you think that way".

But, unfortunately, there are certain realities that we must negotiate as sentient beings. We can't just live in a fantasy world thinking that everything is going to work out. That's how I got in trouble in the first place! (And ironically how I ended up at the Open Mind.)

(pause)

See, I just had a customer. She said that someone stole her sacred sage. She suspects the babysitter who probably thought it was pot! Pretty funny.

So, I've always been a little skeptical about EVERYTHING. It's a terrible way to be in the world. I've learned to live with it by realizing that nothing really matters that much anyway. Only love matters. It's true. Jesus said it. The Beatles said it. I believe it. Don't dare call me a hippie or I'll slug ya, pallie.

But there's this whole law of attraction thing that's been going on with the release of "The Secret". There is nothing new in "The Secret" that hasn't been around for a hundred years. It's just been repackaged in a way that appealed to Middle America. It became about manifesting 'stuff'.

That was the genius of aboriginal author Rhonda Byrne's take on the law of attraction was to rename it. Now she pretty much owns 'The Secret'. That's pretty powerful stuff. And, part of the allure of a secret is that once you know what the secret is, you are in with the 'in' crowd and all your dreams will come true.

But The Law of Attraction stuff that The Secret crap is based on comes out of Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and early 20th century writings like 'Think And Grow Rich'. And, it's just about being positive in ones thoughts.

If you've ever been involved with Multi Level Marketing, then you've have experienced this school of thought. And, Esther and Jerry Hicks of Abraham and Law of Attraction fame are former Amway agents. So, are we just being snowed and sold more soap?

So there was no secret to the Secret. The truth is, Rhonda Byrnnne made a lot of money for repackaging stuff that was already out there and selling it to the great unwashed.

We sold a lot of copies of the Secret to people here at the Open Mind.

I just wish I could sell super strong space magnets instead.

Hi Everyone,

Life has been so full of "change" these past few months that staying connected and balanced is not an easy thing to do! As the world economy spiraled out of control and our presidential election polarized the nation, life as we have known it was changing so rapidly that our minds could hardly grasp the events that were taking place. Staying in the moment was next to impossible as we watched the financial market plummet. Emotions were high and volatile. I feel that a shift has taken place that is allowing us an opportunity to continue the understanding that we can create our own world and that through our thoughts, we will shift our reality. All of this takes place through our emotions and that means staying "heart centered". I found that when I would listen to the news or read the paper, I felt a great deal of fear in my chest that created an even greater feeling of confusion and being scattered in my head! Now, when I returned to my heart, feeling and trusting that all is in Divine order, I was clear and calm. This was not easy, but as I held this space of balance and flow through my feelings, life unfolded in amazing ways. Being outside in nature helped me to reconnect with my feelings. So, go for a walk, stand under the stars, take a deep breath in and be grateful for what you have. Through our emotional body we can begin to reconnect with who we are and begin to take the steps necessary to bring change to our own life as well as our nation and the world. These are grand times we are living in and each and every one of us is part of a beautiful tapestry that we are weaving, so start living life as the Creator you truly as we begin living heaven on earth......

Dolphin Retreat in Bimini April 26 - May 2 2009
Swimming with the wild Spotted dolphins in Bimini this past August was truly life changing for all who came. When you look into the eye of a dolphin there is such a deep soul connection that you feel such joy and gratitude. Each one of us felt a closer bond with not only the dolphins but with each other as well. Our experience was full of laughter, tears, words, hugs, clear waters, blues sky's, great food, many friendly dolphins and service. The day before we left, we returned to the Bimini Road (Atlantean Stones) to hold a ceremony in the water to help start a recalibration of a vortex in this very special part of the earth.

I am grateful to be returning to Bimini in the spring of 2009. Years ago I worked in a shop on Pittsburgh's South Side called Pittsburgh Guitars. They sold (and still do) all manner of musical stringed things. This was in the early 1990s when the South Side, fired by the Rusted Root tribe, was evolving into a never ending Grateful Dead environment.

We used to talk about, what else, the girls that came into the shop. The often lovely, always earthy, sirens wearing tattered clothes and smelling of patchouli wandered in to get strings for their acoustic guitars. And, being earth mamas, they really didn't shave their armpits or their legs (which never really bothered me all that much) which Mark found a little bit distressing.

So, as I was want to do in those days, I wrote a song about hanging out at Pittsburgh Guitars called Mr. Retail. I've never recorded it but Hipster Dufus used to perform it. It's a good song based on Bowie's Gene Genie (or is it Jean Jeanie?).

Now, of course, the irony is that I'm Mr. Retail. I'm sitting here at the shop writing on my blog,
but at least I'm writing.

But I am Mr. Retail...

You gotta watch what you put out into the universe!

Labor Day Weekend

Well, it's Saturday afternoon at the Open Mind and the day has been rather busy, which is great as it makes the day go faster.

After we close at 6, I'm off to set up for the big Salsa dance this evening in Sewickley. As Chamber of Commerce president, I get all the glamourous jobs!

I am lucky though to have such help and cooperation from the Borough of Sewickley, especially from Howard who works for the Borough and is a member of Cochran Volunteer Fire Department. Howard brings the tables and chairs and he's even bringing a gigantic cooler full of ice for us to put drinks in.
And it looks like the weather will be beautiful.

Tomorrow, we (Lisa McCormack and son Joseph who just turned 6) are planning to go the Stoneboro Fair and check out the livestock. (ha ha) I wanted to take them on Friday to see the Demolition Derby but we would have had to leave at 6 PM and that just wasn't in the cards.

I am really looking forward to getting a cup of coffee before the big dance starts. It's the simple things in life that make it livable.

On June 21st, our friend Jim Donovan will be doing a Solstice Celebration at Lotus Heart Rising. Lotus Heart Rising is at 130 Willow Ridge Road in Sewickley right beside the Zen Center. Cindy and Bob, who run Three Rivers Yoga in Coraopolis are hosting this event at Lotus Heart Rising. I'm planning to go and I thought this could be a great community event.

I know that Phil just sent out an email to everyone talking about the great class being offered on Sunday by Carol Ciocco, but I also wanted to send out another message just to let everyone know that Monday, August 7th was Michelene's birthday.

If you don't know who Michelene is you need to stop by the store on a Sunday (we're open from 12 to 6 PM with plenty of FREE Street Parking)! Michelene (or Mickey - which she goes by at the store) is our Sunday Sales Associate. She's the newest bright star those of you meet when you come to our store during our Spirit Fairs, every Sunday and any other day she lends us a hand. If you were at day two (Sunday, July 23rd) of our Summer Spirit Fair you probably meet her as she signed people in at the scheduling board upstairs.

Since Mickey jumped on board we have been fortunate to have a day of the week that helps to bring enough female/yin energy to The Open Mind, balancing ALL of the male/yang energy Phil and I bring to the plate.

This balance has helped us as we shift our focus to be more gentle, kinder and loving. It has also been one of many catalysts that helped us to shift our physical store space to be closer to ALL of YOU wonderful Light Beings! (In case you don’t know - our register and checkout area is now at the very front of the store. Now every customer is greeted with a warm smile, a gentle heart and a friendly hello when you come in! Be sure to stop by and see the remarkable changes we have made.)

So I just wanted to send out a special thank you and acknowledgment to Mickey for all of her hard work and energy she puts into the store. Happy Birthday Mickey!

As usual - I also want to thank everyone out there who walk your spiritual journey with us at your side! Without customers and such wonderful beings to serve The Open Mind would not be here and our personal World would feel that much smaller and alien to each of us as we awaken our Spiritual awareness and purpose!

PS: Here’s one of many cool Open Mind coincidences. Michelene's mom (Joanne) used to own the wonderful coffee shop next to the Open Mind. Cappuccino City ran along-side us for years under Joanne's management. Eventually though Joanne decided to sell the store in 1999/2000 to a lady named Melissa.

To drum up business and provide a place for Sewickley’s Teenagers Melissa decided to bring back poetry, spoken word and open mic night at the coffee shop every Friday in August & September of 2000. It was on September 1st, 2000 that I attended one of those poetry readings and meet Sarah Adams who eventually became my wife – Sarah Hughes!

About four to five months after September 1st, 2000 the coffee shop was closed and the space was turned into a pet store called My Best Friend. Sarah and I continued to date and on September 1st, 2003 we got married. My Best Friend was closed and now the space is Big Ali’s Hair Salon.

Had Michelene's mom never opened her shop and eventually decide to sell the store to Melissa and had I not decided to come back later on in the day - September 1st, 2000 - Sarah and I probably wouldn't have meet.

I just love divinely guided "coincidences" like that! Don't you?
